Andreas Feininger and Susan E. Lyman: The face of New York. The city as it was and as it is. New York 1954 (here 2. ed. 1955), unpaginated (there caption: The El became a mixed blessing as the years rolled by: it was slum-producing, noisy and a hindrance to traffic. Its death knell was sounded in the 1930's and nearly all the lines are now gone. This pattern of shadows on Division Street is only a memory. Soon all rapid transit in New York will be underground.)
